A NOOR journal on the changing planet, 2009 – 2015
Project curated by aBcM. Exhibition curator Laura Serani
Since 2009 the internationally renowned photo reporters from the photographic agency NOOR have been documenting the disastrous worldwide effects of climate change, denouncing the living conditions of entire populations struck by famine, disease, conflicts, forced migrations and loss of their means of subsistence.
This wide-ranging group project underscores the urgent action needed in such desperate and dramatic situations.
Presented for the first time in Copenhagen in December 2009 during the United Nations Climate Summit under the title Consequences, the project has since then continued to develop into various chapters with the production of new series.
By combining their search for new languages with direct eyewitness accounts of the causes and effects of global warming, NOOR photographers have continued to document sensitive situations in different countries and have developed, in parallel, a second phase of the project which sets out to identify experiences capable of containing the rise in global temperatures and of limiting its effects.
The focus of the different projects grouped together under the title Solutions is on the use of alternative power sources and renewable energies, and on the balance between technological innovations and consciously sustainable choices, illustrating the different ways of coping with climate change and of intervening in situations that all too often seem inescapable.
The exhibit on show at this year’s Fotografia Europea Festival is a synthesis of the two phases of the NOOR project, Consequences and Solutions, with the addition of more recent works, offering a comprehensive vision of the grave issues that have emerged in various regions of the planet and of the positive actions that have been put into effect.
